Vigil Bible ("we", "our", "the app") is a Catholic Bible and spiritual companion app. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data we collect and how we use it.
Bible reading and bookmarks: Your bookmarks, last reading position, reading preferences, and settings are stored locally using Apple's standard storage. We do not transmit them to our servers. Device backups may include local app data according to your Apple settings.
Scripture journeys and reflection journal: Journey progress and journal entries are stored on your device. We do not send your journal text to the Companion or our servers. You can read and delete saved entries even after Premium expires. Device backups may include this data according to your Apple settings.
Conversation Messages: When you use the Spiritual Companion feature, a bounded recent portion of your conversation is sent through our secure server proxy to Google Gemini to generate a response. Conversation history is saved locally so you can resume it, and can be deleted in the Companion. Messages are not stored on our servers or linked to a Vigil Bible account. Google's data retention and use policies apply to content processed through the Gemini API. Google states that content submitted through its free API tier may be used to improve its products. Do not include sensitive personal information in Companion messages.
Subscription Status: Payment processing is handled by Apple through StoreKit. To confirm Premium access, the app sends an Apple-signed transaction to our server for verification. We do not store that transaction or collect payment-card information.
Local usage counts: The app stores content-free counts of feature usage and days used on your device. These counts contain no prayer text, questions, verse references, or payment details. They are not transmitted automatically. You can inspect and reset them in Settings. An optional pilot export lets you choose to share a content-free usage file through the system share sheet. It contains feature events, relative timing, and a random pilot identifier, not journal text, conversation text, or verse references. Sharing is your choice, and your chosen sharing service may process the file.
Message allowances: The app sends a random installation identifier to enforce daily and short-term request limits. The server stores a hash of this identifier with temporary counters. Older app versions use a hash derived from their network address instead. Daily counters expire after up to two days in the configured quota store. The identifier is not a user account and counters contain no conversation text. Hosting providers also process network requests under their own operational policies.
The Spiritual Companion feature uses Google's Gemini API to generate responses. Messages are sent through our secure server proxy to the Gemini API. See Gemini API Additional Terms of Service and Google's Privacy Policy.
Bookmarks, settings, reading position, conversation history, Scripture journey progress, reflection journal entries, and local usage counts are stored on your device. Deleting the app removes its local data; Apple backups are governed by your device and backup settings. Deleting local history does not retract messages already processed by the AI provider.
Vigil Bible does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
All network communication uses HTTPS encryption, and API credentials remain on our server. No method of electronic transmission is completely secure, so please avoid including sensitive personal information in Companion messages.
We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated effective date.
